Sun Damaged Skin

What is Sun Damaged Skin?

Sun damaged skin or Pigmented skin can appear for various reasons. Hyper pigmentation or dark skin marks (age spots) are usually the direct result of sun damage and can be treated with the use of specific products designed to lighten and balance skin tones.

Remember a Suntanned Skin is a Damaged Skin. Think of it as the longer your skin is being exposed to any kind of daylight it is ageing quicker than if it was not. So, pigmented skin can be a result of exposure to the sun in winter as well as the summer.

We are exposed even on a cloudy day to UVA and UVB radiation which can cause skin damage including wrinkles, pigmented skin and worst of all skin cancer. The breakdown of natural collagen as a result would be associated with the inevitable wrinkles being formed.

This UV radiation is one of the main creators of free radicals which are unstable oxygen molecules that have only one electron instead of two and then constantly trying to scrounge other electrons. This process can damage cell function and alter genetic material and causes wrinkles by activating the metalloproteinases that break down collagen.

Typical Questions on Sun Damaged Skin

How can I help prevent pigmented skin?

Unfortunately we usually get asked this after some sun damage has already occurred. Well, the biggest and most important tip we can give you is use Sun Protection ALL THE TIME and a minimum protection of SPF 30. Some of our moisturisers contain an SPF in them so two things are achieved for the price of one.

We all must protect our skin from the UVA & UVB rays of the sun and wherever possible reduce exposure to them. As mentioned above there is a significant impact on skin cell structure and collagen which promotes premature skin ageing and pigmentation. Try and use a sun cream product everyday and where possible use the shade and maybe a hat?

Classic examples we see are particularly men who drive their cars with the window open and then are surprised that the right side of their face becomes pigmented!

What is Hyper pigmentation?

Hyper pigmentation is dark skin marks which are a common condition where areas of the skin become darker in colour than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin (the brown pigment) is produced and this colour forms deposits in the skin.

Things like Freckles and Age Spots can become darker and stand out more when your skin is exposed to the sun. The reason for this is that the Melanin takes in and absorbs the energy of the UV rays in an attempt to protect the skin from being over exposed.

You no doubt will recognize this as tanning. So this process tends to further darken any areas that are already hyper pigmented and you must wear a sunscreen. The sunscreen must be a "broad spectrum" type, which is one that blocks both UVA and UVB. If you have a single day of excess sun and UVA/UVB exposure you will undo months of the good work that you could do using the right products to reduce pigmentation.

What products can you recommend for skin pigmentation?

Well our main tip is to use a sun screen protection and to resolve some of these issues look at the Sun Damaged Skin range to help with skin pigmentation.

There are various products using natural, lightening ingredients such as Vitamin C, Liquorice and Mulberry to help lighten and brighten dark skin marks. The PRIORI Even Tones is an excellent product and it does exactly what it says to even the skin tones out.  Our Skin Care Kits are tremendous value and in this case the MD Illuminating kit is no exception.

What are Age Spots?

Age spots are a common type of hyper pigmentation and this occurs due to sun damage. These small, darkened patches are usually found on the hands and face or other areas frequently exposed to the sun. These are quite common on the more mature client and lightening products are available to help reduce the dark skin tone like Priori Even Tones.
