NORMAL SKIN

How would we describe Normal Skin

If you have “Normal Skin” then this is actually quite unusual! Most of us have some sort of skin condition or another, but if your skin is well balanced, has a healthy colour, good texture and gives you no problems, then you are very lucky.

Quite often we relate/classify the skin in its various conditions by the Ph Level it has i.e. where it is in the Alkaline to Acid range. The Ph level of Normal Skin has a range of 4 to 6.5, which is slightly acidic. This acidic environment for the skin is referred to as the skin's 'acid mantle'. One of the major functions of the acid mantle is to protect the skin and body from the absorption of bacteria. As bacteria cannot survive in an acidic environment, maintaining the correct level of acidity is vital.

Typical questions we get asked about Normal Skin and some of our recommendations

We always get asked what skin care products should be used for the variety of skin types and of course your skin will never remain exactly the same. This can vary due to your Age, the environment you are in, the seasons of course and other factors linked to such things as diet etc.

One of the major culprits that radically alter the pH of the skin is the soap you use!!!  So, when clients come to our clinic www.remediesbeauty.co.uk and we are doing a consultation facial as an example, an initial key question for us to ask is “What do you use to cleanse your skin?”

Some of the soaps presented to us have an equivalent alkaline level of AJAX, so would you put this on your skin?

So it is vitally important to check what you are using on your skin.

So, you need to get the right balance of cosmetics and beauty products for yourself and then use them, to effectively maintain your skin in a healthy condition and keeps it younger looking. Sun Protection is always vitally important all year round and we always recommend a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30.

You can decide which type of skincare product you prefer and “Medium” weight moisturisers with water soluble cleansers and exfoliants are usually a good choice.

Under our Product Type listings we have grouped together certain products that we recommend for each skin type to help you establish what is best for you. So click here for Normal Skin Type products.

DRY SKIN

How would we describe Dry Skin

If you have “Dry Skin” then you may find beauty products seem unable to penetrate your skin. It is rough to the touch and has a dull colour. Do not despair because most of us have some sort of skin condition or another, but if we can get your skin well balanced,  give it a healthy colour, with a good texture then we are sure you will be happy.

Quite often we relate/classify the skin types by the Ph Level it has i.e. where it is in the Alkaline to Acid range. The Ph level of Dry Skin is more likely to be more at the extremes i.e. too Acid or too Alkaline. Ideally your skin needs to be slightly acidic (Ph 5.5) known as the skin's 'acid mantle' and one of the major functions of the acid mantle is to protect the skin and body from the absorption of bacteria. As bacteria cannot survive in an acidic environment, maintaining the correct level of acidity is vital.

Typical questions we get asked about Dry Skin and some of our recommendations

Typically for a Dry Skin type we get asked:

  • “How can I stop getting these dry patches of skin?”
  • “My dry skin often becomes inflamed and can become flaky”
  •  “If I do put on Oily products on my dry skin they always feel too heavy and don’t seem to go into the skin very easily”

All clients ask us what skincare products they should be using and of course your skin will never remain exactly the same all the time. Dry skin can often be linked to a more mature person or someone who has a hormonal issue. You must not forget too that the environment you are in has an impact and you could now be in a centrally heated air conditioned office, which you were not previously.

One of the major culprits that radically alter the pH of the skin is the soap you use!!!  So, when clients come to our clinic www.remediesbeauty.co.uk  an initial key question for us to ask is “What do you use to cleanse your skin?”

Some of the soaps presented to us have an equivalent alkaline level of AJAX, so would you put this on your skin? So it is vitally important to check what you are using on your skin.

So for Dry Skin types regular Exfoliation is very important to help remove a build up of dead skin cells and we recommend the use of Oil based cleansers and moisturisers. We advise that you avoid powder based foundations and look at your diet and lifestyle too. You can also layer on Serums and Moisturisers and SPF

So, with the right balance of beauty and cosmetic products and their use it  significantly help to effectively maintain your skin in a healthy condition and keep it younger looking. We always advise Sun Protection for all year round and we always recommend a SPF30.

Under our Product Type listings we have grouped together some skincare products that we recommend for each skin type to help you establish what is best for you. So click here for Dry Skin Type products.

ACNE & OILY SKIN

How would we describe Acne/Oily Skin

If you have “Acne/Oily Skin” then you probably find you develop a shine on your skin through the day. You will be prone to blockages of your pores and more than likely some breakouts (spots). Your skin maybe sensitive, affected by hormonal issues and oily/acne skin is most commonly found during the age of puberty.

The pores of our skin are made up of a combination of oil and sweat glands (sebaceous and sudoriferous glands) helping to keep our skin healthy and elastic. An excess of sebum secretion is often linked with oily skin and acne. This is particularly common in adolescents because the increased levels of the sex hormones will stimulate sebum production and secretion. When the skin is balanced it will have a combined excretion of oil and sweat from the skin’s pores which has a pH of about 5.5.

The skin’s pH level is important and we often relate/classify skin types by the Ph Level it has i.e. where it is in the Alkaline to Acid range and maintaining a slightly acidic pH of around 5.5 is critical. The skin’s pH value is one of the major contributors to acne and other skin problems. Propionibacterium acnes (P Acnes) is a bacteria that normally lives on the skin regardless of the presence or absence of acne.

However, in individuals prone to acne, the number of P. acnes is greatly increased. It has been found that the growth of these bacteria is very much dependent on the pH value of the skin and its growth is at its minimum at the normal skin pH of 5.5. A slight shift towards the alkaline pH would provide a better environment in which it can thrive.

Typical questions we get asked about Oily/Acne Skin and some of our recommendations

Clients often tell us that their skin feels and looks lumpy under the surface and we are told that any moisturisers or SPF products used appear too heavy on the surface. Other classic symptoms are Blackheads and Whiteheads (Milia) and in severe cases cysts.
We would recommend not overloading on skin care products and to keep it simple using the right balance of these beauty products. Go for Oil Free Skin Care and use exfoliating masks NOT scrubs, to prevent over stimulating the sebaceous glands. Clay based cleansers help to clear pores and anti-bacterial ingredients help to prevent spots.

We also provide effective treatments for Acne at our clinic near Exeter in Devon. For more information on this just click here www.remediesbeauty.co.uk .

SENSITIVE SKIN

How would we describe Sensitive Skin

If you have “Sensitive Skin” then it can be of any skin type which can develop later in life. Quite often hormonal changes cause an increase in sensitivity and certain skin conditions e.g. eczema and Rosacea. Stress may be a factor too. The skin can become redder in colour and often has broken veins, can become Hot and Irritated.

The skin’s pH level is important and we often relate/classify skin types by the Ph Level it has i.e. where it is in the Alkaline to Acid range and maintaining a slightly acidic pH of around 5.5 is critical.

Typical questions we get asked about Sensitive Skin and some of our recommendations

Our clients always tell us that they have tremendous difficulty finding suitable products to help control the symptoms as the ones they use can sometimes make things worse.

Clients have difficulties using make up containing perfume and chemical ingredients. Even a small amount of irritating ingredient can trigger a sensitive response.

We would suggest for a sensitive skin that LESS IS BEST. Favour simple products with minimal ingredients and use a physical sun protection method, not a chemical one e.g. Zinc Oxide.

The type of products we would suggest are Calming cleansers which can be removed without water, Barrier creams for daily use to protect against the potential aggravating environmental intrusions on the skin and DO NOT use any harsh exfoliating scrubs.
As previously mentioned there is a need to protect the Acid Mantle on the skin and a great Make Up product would be the Bare Mineral range containing natural minerals.

We also provide effective treatments for Rosacea and Red Veins at our clinic near Exeter in Devon. For more information on this just click here www.remediesbeauty.co.uk .

AGEING SKIN

How would we describe Ageing Skin

Skin which is “Ageing” will suffer with a loss of elasticity causing fine lines and wrinkles. A main cause of premature ageing is the effects of the sun and subsequent damage that ensues.

Remember a Sun Tanned Skin is a Damaged Skin!

Ageing skin is also likely to have pigmented marks (Age Spots) and can appear dull in colour. Skin under the eyes can become darkened an increase in eye folds and possible swelling under the eyes.

The skin’s pH level is important and we often relate/classify skin types by the Ph Level it has i.e. where it is in the Alkaline to Acid range and maintaining a slightly acidic pH of around 5.5 is critical.

Typical questions we get asked about Ageing Skin and some of our recommendations

On of the most common skin problems of all is that of ageing skin. Clients are waking up to the fact that if their skin is looked after properly and they become more aware of what causes premature ageing that they can do simple things to keep it looking younger longer.

We get asked:

  • “How do I improve and then maintain my skin”
  • “How do I slow down the ageing process” which we all know cannot be stopped altogether but we can help reduce the unattractive results of having aged skin.
  • “What creams do and do not work?”

One thing to make sure you do all year round in summer and winter is use a sun protection on your skin. These are often built into moisturisers and other products which make it so easy to do, no excuse!

We would recommend the use of a daily SPF 30 to protect against the damaging and ageing effects of UVA and UVB rays. The use of Anti-Ageing ingredients includes AHA’s, Antioxidant Vitamins and Protein and Collagen simulators. Very important to assess lifestyle balance too e.g. diet and exercise.

We also provide effective treatments for Pigmentation and Skin Rejuvenation at our clinic near Exeter in Devon. For more information on this just click here www.remediesbeauty.co.uk .

COMBINATION SKIN

How would we describe Combination Skin

If you have a “Combination” skin type you quite often have an Oily “T” ZONE” (Forehead, Nose and Chin) with Normal /Dry cheeks and neck.

The oily areas will most likely suffer with blockages and open other areas can be quite dry and flaky.

The skin’s pH level is important and we often relate/classify skin types by the Ph Level it has i.e. where it is in the Alkaline to Acid range and maintaining a slightly acidic pH of around 5.5 is critical.

Typical questions asked about Combination Skin and some of our recommendations

We frequently get asked:

  • “Please can you recommend some skin care and beauty products for me?”
  • “Which skin type to major on?
  • “Why is it so difficult to get my skin right”
  • “I have tried loads of products without success – help please?”

Obviously one size does not fit all on this skin type and so we need to get the balance of products right and be prepared to change as your skin changes.

If you prefer oil based cleanser then use a light weight moisturizer. The skin care products you need may also vary between AM and PM, summer and winter.

One of the major culprits for radically changing the Ph level of the skin is the soap you use!!!  So, when clients come to our clinic an initial key question for us to ask is “What do you use to cleanse your skin?”

DEHYDRATED SKIN

How would we describe Dehydrated Skin

You may find yourself with “Dehydrated Skin” regardless of your regular skin type and at anytime e.g. during puberty onto your more mature years.

Your skin is most likely to feel quite tight and very thirsty for products. The skin may suffer very fine lines with a look like parchment especially around the eyes.

The skin’s pH level is important and we often relate/classify skin types by the Ph Level it has i.e. where it is in the Alkaline to Acid range and maintaining a slightly acidic pH of around 5.5 is critical.

Typical questions asked about Dehydrated Skin and some of our recommendations

Dehydrated Skin can occur on top of another existing skin problem or skin type, even Acne skin. So this needs to be addressed along side the predominant skin type.

Key factors here are an excess in such things as Alcohol and Caffeine for example which have a dehydrating effect and diet may need adjusting along with correct balance of skin care products.

You will need to use beauty and skin care products like Hydrating Boosters and Serums. These can be worked into your normal skin care routine but NOT Oil based as they need to be water based to re-hydrate the skin. The layering of products is important too.

One of the major culprits for radically changing the Ph level of the skin is the soap you use!!!

So, when clients come to our clinic an initial key question for us to ask is “What do you use to cleanse your skin?”

SUN DAMAGED SKIN

How would we describe Sun Damaged Skin

As the name suggests your skin would have been subjected to the harmful UVA and UVB rays from the sun, even under a cloudy sky!!

Your skin is likely to be pigmented with a variety of skin tones ranging from light to darker patches and will most probably make you look older than you actually are as sun damage causes premature ageing of the skin. Your skin can have a rough texture to it and in worse cases often be referred to as looking like leather. Unprotected skin will also suffer from unsightly red veins.

Many people do not realise or appreciate how bad this problem can be and we can show examples of this in our skin scanner at the clinic, where the right side of the face has suffered more than the left. Why is that they ask? We explain what happens when driving long distances on a sunny day even with the window closed !!!

Typical questions asked about Sun Damaged Skin and some of our recommendations

This is without doubt one of the biggest problems we face today as a result of climate change, increased holidays abroad, more outdoor activity even our alfresco lunches!

People want to be outside but more importantly they do not want to look old before their time ……. DO YOU?
Clients are wising up to this slowly and asking:

  • “How do I prevent further damage?”
  • “How serious are these patches of darker skin?”
  • “What products should I use?”
  • “Can I be treated to remove some of these red veins and darker skin areas?”

In addition to supplying quality skin care products we also provide effective treatments for Red Veins and Skin Rejuvenation at our clinic near Exeter in Devon. For more information on this just click here www.remediesbeauty.co.uk . We firmly recommend the daily application of an SPF 30 sun protection product regardless of the level of sun damage you may or may not have yet.

There are some skin lightening ingredients such as AHA’s, cosmetic natural lighteners such as Vitamin C. Regular treatments such as Glycolic Peels will also help. There are more advanced, higher strength lighteners available but these are usually only available on prescription.

Light diffusing make up can also help blend an even skin tone giving a far more balanced skin appearance.

If you have genuine concerns on any significant changes in your skin colour, we would advise you to see a dermatologist.

Under our Product Type listings we have grouped together certain products that we recommend for each skin type to help you establish what is best for you.

The results can be fantastic........................

You do not need to suffer from those irritable rashes, that dry skin, red veins on the face and nose as you can do something to stop this happening.

DO YOU WET SHAVE?  ………………… DO YOU USE SOAP ?

Have you ever looked at your shaving product to see what it contains or what the Ph level is?

Do you even know what the Ph Level is?  You really need to understand the importance of Ph as you most likely shave and/or wash your face in soap every day of your life.

Some of the soaps presented to us have an equivalent alkaline level of AJAX, so would you put this on your skin?

It is vitally important to check what you are using on your skin so have a look and see if it has a Ph of 5.5 which it needs to have.

……… GO ON - have a look at that Shaving Foam or Gel.

The eyes and lips quite often get forgotten but absolutely key in making you look vibrant and healthy.

These are delicate areas and need to be treated carefully with light weight products. Not all products that you may be using elsewhere on the face or body are appropriate for your Eyes and Lips.

The use of Sun Protection in the form of gentle SPF and Light Diffusers to camouflage any dark lines or circles is a good product.
